Well, they aren't actually charging any more for the date back, if it's the money you're concerned about. If it isn't the money, just don't put a battery in the date back. It uses a separate battery. I think having the ability to put the date on a picture is valuable when you are shooting things for the family album. It's nice to know exactly when family pictures were taken. The date function can be turned off when you don't want to use it. As an alternative, if you just can't live with the shame of owning a camera with a date back, just order a plain back from Pentax, it's not expensive, and change it yourself. it's easy.
