Trying to print a photo yesterday on my Epson 3800 I found that the photo black ink cartridge appears to be empty, even though I just replaced it a month ago and have run only a handful of prints since then. The maintenance cartridge, which I also replaced last month, is showing 35% full, which is way too full so quickly. When I went to fire up the print last month the photo black was also empty then - though then as now it shows nearly full on the printers usage gauge. My guess is that the PK ink is slowly draining into the maintenance tray when the printer is idle.

I'm thinking about replacing this with a 3880, basically the same printer but with the updated K3 inks (vivid magenta).

Is anyone here using the 3880 now? Any comments on it? I have found that the 3800 has met my relatively low volume needs for the past 6 or 7 years, with my only complaint being that it is a little flimsy on the build quality. If the 3880 is the same that would be OK.

Does anyone know if the 3880 can use the same ink cartridges as the 3800? The ones I have in the 3800 are all 80% full or more and I have 8 new cartridges on hand - all tolled that is almost $1,000 worth of ink. I may be able to sell the sealed cartridges but am sure I could not sell the ones installed in the printer now. Looking on the web it appears the the two printers can use the same cartridges but if that is the case, where do the upgraded K3 inks come into play with the 3880?

Any comments would be appreciated -

Mark
