I've been researching the 3880 as I do expect my R2400 to die soon. It's very 
old. For me, the question is between the 3800 and the 3000, since I so rarely 
print larger than an 11x17. 

Between the 3800 and 3880 printers, they take the same ink cartridges, 
physically, but the inks are different with respect to the magentas. Most of 
the ink carts can be used in either, the magentas are model specific.
