So... here's an update... while waiting on the cheapo display screen
that I ordered to arrive, inspiration struck. Connecting the camera
from the pc/av port to a personal dvd player transmits everything on
the lcd screen - including live view and image review - to that
screen. The only glitch is that the aspect ratio isn't quite right,
working on that...

Anyhooo, an interesting development, I thought. I used the pc/av
cable that came with the camera, and this dvd player, which I picked
up used:
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DVP-FX820-8-Inch-Portable-Player/dp/B00139R1TA

If I can get the aspect ratio issue ironed out, it could be a
moderately OK solution... the screen is a good size, 8 inches, tilts,
flips & swivels, and it has a battery pack and a car adapter.
