You are right, of course, but why bring the optical assembly (lens included) down to chip size instead of bringing the chip up to 24x36 mm? Besides compatibility, this last alternative will insure resources for future resolution increase, possibly up to the film capabilities. There's obviously going to be - even in the digital future - tiny point and shoot cameras with non removable lenses and big cameras with interchangeable lenses, optical viewfinders and of course higher resolutions. I don't see why this specie has to be smaller then current 24x36 systems, unless smaller area chip can support 16 MPixels.
