Well, the page said the new owner WOULD SELL, so I figured it would cost money.

I actually called the company when I found my iffydoemain.org wasn't available and they said it had been registered on May 6th by someone else. So I just made it iffydoemain.com instead.

I think Larry is right, it is the hosting company itself, because it is a very unusual name so who else would want it?

It probably is a way for them to get more money out of me.

The hosting company acted like they knew nothing about it. But the since the same exact thing happened with my photography site, it IS a bit suspicious.
