Sorry, but I couldn't see where the paradox is... is it that reality is only at full when you are not looking at it through the viewfinder, but you are supposed to be trying to portray it thus? Don't forget that your own views of reality are mediated by your own personal experiences, culture, society, time... This is quite clear in your example of the German photographer during nazism.
