I'll try and combine all my replies to you all into one:

John -

I see what you mean, so I will be needing to change over to WFS, also I
need to check my current preferences. Thanks for the link, it will be
interesting reading.

Craig -

>There are still things about 2004 that I

>that is biased towards FPGA design.

"Unhelp system", I find 99SE much the same, if you want to know something
basic then it's fine, but things particularly like errors when
synchronising sch to pcb, the messages it gives mean absolutely nothing,
often it takes a long time to work out which component/connection the
problem lies with! But I digress...

FPGA design is of no use to us here to be honest, we use PIC's and Hitachi
H8 processors and similar, we still have at least one all analogue
product.

Gareth -

They don't sound too large at all, I have some 40MB ddb's, they are files
for designs not just libraries though. As I've said above I need to check
compression, though I'm nearly almost positive I have compressed one of
them before...

I'll find out exactly what he tried.

I'll be wanting to integrate existing components/footprints/designs into
2004 from 99SE also without too much work. I'll be needing to use
SourceSafe then to provide central version control, though it is nice to
know I can also have local version control if I want it.

Thanks and Best Regards

Norman,

Our schematic library is about 1.5Meg and footprint library about 5meg. To
me those sizes are not outrageous. One thing that is important when using
sourcesafe with .ddb files is to make sure that the 'Compact Design after
closing' is enabled. You will find that option from the design explorer -
down arrow (next to File menu) - design utilities.

Just wondering, when your colleague says HUGE, what actual file sizes is
he seeing?

About DXP 2004. We have just upgraded (last week), however won't be using
it until we upgrade our computers next month. The libraries that come
with 2004 look to be quite comprehensive, both schematic and footprint. So
at this early stage, I am really unsure as to how we might integrate our
99se libs with 2004's, or whether we will at all. None of our libraries
have simulation models attached, I think that many of the 2004 libraries
might do, so that may influence what we do as well. I don't know yet!
What I would like to be able to do is somehow link 2004 libraries into our
database, however, our database system is an archaic dos based "Relational
Database System" that won't relate to anything! Anyway, once we've had
time to have a look at what our options are, I'll certainly be back to
this forum to ask some questions.

About 2004 version control. It does interface to sourcesafe (and others),
so you still need to use your existing version control software for
centralised version control. If you don't want to have a centralised
version control, 2004 does provide a locally based version control.

Cheers for now,
Gareth.

Gareth/John/All,

Has anyone who does use ddb's with SourceSafe found that the SourceSafe
database ends up HUGE? I found out that my colleague has tried it but had
this problem (I really should speak with him more we're in the same
office!).

Does anyone know if this is easier with 2004 than 99SE? I think we'd look
at 2004 if it would help us with this but it also depends how many other
new techniques etc we'd have to learn and if the upgrade is worthwhile.

I've already found this
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg00295.html and this
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg00917.html

it seems 2004 has something to take care of version control, in which case

I'd only need to store the central libraries in SourceSafe.

Thanks to all.

Best Regards

Gareth

Perhaps as the files are locked until you actually close P99SE? Sometimes
even waiting for the process to stop afetr a long session.

Sometimes if the application crashes and has to be terminated you will see

a
.ldb file of the same name as the .ddb present in the same path (if you
allow view of system files :-) )
