Using a zero with a vertical slash (like capital Phi) helps to distinguish it from the letter "O". Similarly, applying a vertical slash thru the "S" (looks a bit like the US dollar symbol) is often used in (critical) handwritten correspondence when there is the possibility of confusion between it and the numeral five.
Unfortunately, this is a bit academic, since we can't arbitrarily add a slash to a character when using the computer...Okay, so we probably can, but doing so in normal discourse would turn writing into a total pain in the keester.
