Altium threw a bit of a monkey wrench in that, by refusing to allow
resale of licenses. 99SE licences should still be resellable, but I'm
not sure about DXP. Somewhere in there they decided to cut it off, to
the dismay of some.

It used to be that older licenses maintained a good "trade-in" value.
Again, that got trashed.

If anyone still wishes to buy or sell 99SE licenses, and isn't
concerned about Altium recognition of the sale for support and
upgrade purposes, there is a mailing list, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

When DXP was selling for $8000, and a 99SE license was worth $4000 in
trade-in, it was quite reasonable to buy a 99SE license for $4000,
and that is what some people did, with my assistance. From my point
of view, it was win-win. Altium got a new customer, a market for
upgrades -- and probably the majority of these licenses did end up
being upgraded. The original owner got some of their investment out.
And the buyer saved some initial outlay, retaining the choice to go
for the next version, at least until Altium announced that the
upgrade discount was going away. They were reasonably well-behaved
about that, generally letting people know that the end was coming.

But I really don't agree with the tack they took; it was not in their
customers' interest. And when a company is not acting in its
customers' interest, it's going down the wrong path. Obviously, the
company must insure that its own needs are met, but when it appears
that company interests and customer interests are at odds, it's a
clue that the analysis is defective. Or one is in the wrong business!
