John -------------------------------------------------- Fundamental principle for making an old system look prettier: If you want to make the interface to an old system look prettier, don't make any changes to the old system. Just write a program that takes the output from the old system and reformats it in a prettier way. But let the old system keep doing what it has been doing successfully for years. That means the old system will keep doing what it has been doing forever. No problems with the new system will ever cause any data to be lost. And whenever the new system has problems, people can just get the data from the old system. I worked in IBM research & development for 30 years. And I coined a universal mantra that is just as applicable today as it ever was: "Whenever you depend on a computer to do anything, you're asking for grief." But there are ways to compartmentalize the grief to keep it from spreading.
