Perhaps we can encourage Michael Perelman to spend a year travelling in
Africa and Asia. Although he writes superb books, I think that his horizons
would be broadened by the experience and it would reflect itself in his
online engagements. Like many tenured professors, Michael has a tendency
not to see beyond his immediate turf. The other day he was not sure where
you were from. Indonesia was his guess. All I know is that when somebody
with a name like Sabri or Ali shows up on my list, I bend over backwards to
find out what their story is. But then again I am trying to unite Marxists
across the planet so I have a somewhat different agenda. In any case,
PEN-L--despite the stimulating conversations--is far too North American,
far too elderly, far too white and far too professorial.
