Michael,
Sabri is an arabic/muslim name (not that I have any religion) so it is possible
that an Indonesian with the same name wrote to you. I don't recall writing to
you to introduce myself as an Indonesian. I remember however that one of my
very first posts to this list was on Indonesia and it might have been the
reason why you thought I was an Indonesian. As you may remember, I claimed in
that post that it was my belief that Indonesia was going to disintegrate sooner
or later. I also claimed that South Korea and Taiwan were not doing well either
and Brad intervened. So, in such a heavy traffic list with so many regulars, I
don't think there is anything wrong with extrapolating from those signals that
someone with a muslim name who made his first post on Indonesia is an
Indonesian.
Now!
Let me mention that I did not send my original post to critize Michael or Lou
or academics or other members of this list. All I wanted to do was to encourage
those subscribers from other countries to send us information and join in the
discussions. I also wanted to ask your, that is, regulars', help, by asking
some questions, so that we can work together to encourage our friends from
elsewhere to join in.
After all, capitalism is a world system and it is everywhere. Academia
reproduces capitalist social relations too. Whether you are at a university or
some other place of work, you experience the same shit.
Obviously, Brad enjoys it but who cares?
To put it differently, there is no place to escape and we are all polluted.
Back to the original issue:
What can we do to hear from non-anglo-americans more?
Best,
Sabri
