My recent experience of an initial install on OS X is finding the supporting libraries and programmes, getting ExtUtils::F77 tied to a Fortran. It's all documented, but some of the docs and the URIs they reference are a bit out of date. Inclusion of any binary dependencies (if supported in MacPorts) would also need to account for differences in the various animals that are OS X (Snow Leopard, Lion ...).

I'm not familiar enough with PDL to be useful in this respect, but I would be available for running tests on OS X 10.8.6.
