Dear all
I absolutely concur that this is a great database and has many features which
capture data, flag up concerns and the work these guys are doing also is to how
to present IPM data.
We have experimented in the past with Access but again this is complex (and
costly ) software
Bear in mind also that Open office will take excel data

A new, simplified way of calculating pest activity was presented by Jane
Henderson and I at the recent 2019 IPM Conference in Stockholm. The paper will
be published in September as far as I am aware, but our template spreadsheet is
already live and available for to download for free on this permalink
https://museum.wales/media/45874/Pest-Record-Datasheets-NMC-Template-2018.xlsx.

The reason why we chose Excel as a vehicle for this is because Excel is widely
available and does not incur any additional cost, such as specialised software
like ZPest etc would, and also allows people with restrictive IT policies to
access a dedicated yet easily modifiable programme for recording and analysing
complex pest monitoring data.

Caroline asked a question about the number of traps per room – of course the
size of the room monitored and the number of traps deployed affects the number
of pests caught but is not considered sufficiently during most monitoring
programmes. Our template datasheet with embedded calculations does account
specifically for this, allowing meaningful comparisons of pest activity between
rooms, buildings and sites with different numbers of pest monitors and
rooms/buildings of different size and use.

Adrian talked about conditional formatting – this is an invaluable tool and our
database template does that, too, in order to highlight areas of increased pest
activity (using a simple traffic light colour coding system).

Best regards

Christian

Hi James,

We currently use a spreadsheet, however I’d like to try out ZPest soon!

Here’s a screen shot (Hope this goes through OK, if not I’ll try again with an
attachment.)

Notes:

  * It’s set up this way in terms of the “Condition 1 and Condition 2”
Columns so we could potentially send the data into another program someday; we
were hoping Emu, but the funds fell away.
  * “Species” and “Group” columns are pull downs to help eliminate spelling
errors primarily, and limit choices so we don’t have off-the-wall entries of
“new” pests and any new species must be confirmed by me before adding to the
list.

Happy to explain any other details.

It would be very helpful if someone had an excel/google sheets template that

We have a standard for the type of collection and the decision on the number of
traps is based on this
Regarding room size, we are still working on this as a concept as it also needs
to take into account the shape of the store
For a category A room minimum of 2 floor / blunder traps and a minimum of 1 AF
(webbing clothes moth trap). We are woking on standards for different room
categories ( especially category A ) for example these category stores are
monitored for humidity and temperature with our environmental monitoring
system, have an annual clean etc
I will sort out a clean sample of our database as soon as I can

Hi All,
I also would be interested in seeing the database, please can you send me a

Can I ask how you decide the number of traps to place in a strong room? Is it
related to the size of the room?
Thanks

Dear all
Have you considered using conditional formatting (CF) in an excel spreadsheet
based on the threat level (ie IPM risk) verses the catch number
Eg we have a spreadsheet which has the IPM risk A (highly munchable) to D – Low
risk colour coded
For the High risk the Cf is set at 5 catches for Webbing clothes moth whereas
in a low risk area D- the CF level is set at 10
When the data is input, the colour changes
The National Trust have a very effective IPM database and like Megan, I can
send a sample of our database for you to play with

We’re not allowed to download programs onto our computers, so I’ve had to make
do with an Access database that I put together myself. I designed the database
to help me track pests based on their threat level to collections. I then use
the report feature to summarize the problem areas of our museum as well as the
quantity and type of moderate and high risk pests. I would be happy to share
the database with you if you’re interested!

Hello,

Over the course of 2019 Binghamton University has been tracking the bugs in our
4 library buildings. We initially used a basic Google spreadsheet, but as data
is coming in every week, the spreadsheet isn't as wonderful an option as I
initially thought mainly due to it's size. A program that might help us
identify trends would be ideal, but as of now, the spreadsheet is so unwieldy
that that process will be incredibly time consuming. Do any of you use or know
of other options we might use to track our creepy crawlies?

Thanks,
