Greetings Ashley, The moth appears to be the "bee moth" (Aphomia sociella<https://bugguide.net/node/view/29899>) from the Family Pyralidae. It's a European species that is pretty well established in NE North America. They're inquilines of the nests of certain wasps and bees. Given the setting (second story), I'm suspicious there may have been a wasp nest in that area last year—either in the wall void, attic crawl space, or nearby externally (on a soffit overhang, etc.). I don't see too many cases of these, but if they're present in a wall void the adults can trickle out over time.

I have recently been battling this particular type of moth in one of our historic houses. They seemed to be mostly around the windows in the second floor. Based on looking over the descriptions and fact sheets, my theory at the moment is the brown house moth. But I'm not necessarily convinced; they seem a little too grey to be the "brown" house moth. Thanks in advance for your help! Best, Ashley -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MuseumPests" group.
