Anyway I'm off to see what I can install without breaking ubuntu. Any
bets on how long it lasts?

No bets, but as every good study requires a control I upgraded my home PC to 8.04 last night.

The upgrade "completely broke" the X configuration but that's sorted now. Where "completely broke" means it dropped down to 800x600 (I remember when "broke" meant a mess of errors in a terminal), and "sorted now" means :
   sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings
   sudo nvidia-settings
.. and selecting the correct mode and saving it.

This is all using the proprietary nvidia driver (not the open source nv one), so it looks like they are even keeping the main proprietary drivers up to date with beta kernels.
