I would not think that they would track well, without the 'give' of the spring. 
The rigid bolt connection seems as if it would be very stiff.  For those who 
are unfamiliar with this early horn, I have posted a picture of the horn and 
crane and the suspension bolt at this link:

Does anyone have an early cygnet horn without the spring?  How do these work 
without the coil spring?  I have seen them but it does not look like a workable 
system
 to me.
