Hey Guys. Ok, the first thing i want to mention before i get into the point of this email is that i'm not in anyway trying to be difficult. What i am trying to do is start discussion again about the documentation license. And yes, i've read the archives, and no Egon, i don't want to hear from your lawyers.
This stuff has been spoken about before, but given that we now have ZendAPI in the repository, (which, btw, i'm working on converting to phpdoc proper...) this is perhaps time to standardize everything. With those caveats spoken about, let me go on to the main point of this message. As it stands right now, the PHP Documentation does not go along with that of the main PHP source license. This is bad for a number of reasons: - a small number of people have "acclaim" for the documentation. And whatever anyone might say, it's not edited by Stig and Egon, but by many more people. People like Harmut should be on the front page of the manual, and he's not - and that's a bad thing. - a small number of people religiously hold control over the Documentation. This is bad, and does not help or encourage new people to take part. - If i want/see a need to make a change to the front page, i shouldn't expect to be shouted at (unless i had broken it, etc). So the point here is that - in theory - only a small number of people "own" the license to the documentation. This doesn't really go along with the whole aim of the project, at large. As far as the actual license goes, GPL is probably not where we want to be - it's something i personally shy away from due to it's restrictiveness. There are many other open source documentation licenses, and we should probably be looking at them. Finally, yes i am aware that this is also due to be discussed at the meeting in march, however i feel it's of importance (given zendapi's introduction to PHP cvs) to start discussion now - and at least have some idea of current general thoughts. -- James Cox :: [EMAIL PROTECTED] :: Landonize It! http://landonize.it/ Was I helpful? http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/wishlist/23IVGHQ61RJGO/
