I'd say that with -v, absolutely -- a warning can be printed.  Otherwise,
it probably depends on the "importance" of the package, which has something
to do with whether the package delivers an application or supporting bits,
and something to do with whether the user explicitly asked for its
installation at some point, and maybe some other magic goo.

Right. This is an edge case, since "important" packages generally won't
be obsoleted. But, if a user has a usable package on their system and don't
track what's happening to it and decide to do a pkg install to get a new
version and their package disappears without confirmation, they may get upset.
BTW. they probably won't do a -v.
