Is there a specific reason to have separate 64-bit packages, or is this
only because the 1.6 packages are like this?

In the past with Java 6 we also had the concern with the size of the
64-bit runtime package. Before LZMA, it would have added over 6MB to
the Live CD and roughly 22MB on an image.

Why "openjdk" instead of "jdk"? Will there be a non-"open" jdk at some
point and we need to distinguish them?

It's my understanding that there may indeed be a non-open version of
this in the future, hence the name.

Why "manual-japan" instead of "manual-ja" or "manual-japanese"? Seems like
a compromise that's neither horse nor fish. :)

I'm alright with manual-ja since we've discussed using the locale name
there. Or maybe manual/ja? :-)
