Is there a specific reason to have separate 64-bit packages, or is

I suspect it's because 1.6 does it that way. From looking at the 1.6 DLJ
bundles, it seems that that 64 bit stuff is a separate overlay, so I
guess that led to it being its own package.
Is there any reason to continue doing that? The vast majority of the
packages in the OS which had been split up on 32/64 boundaries have been
merged, so there's a strong precedent for combining them, even if it's not
mandatory.
I think for this set of packages, being the initial one, it's simply been
done to keep the release engineering effort as close to existing effort done
for JDK 6 as possible. For embedded OpenSolaris use, being able to split
out the 64 bit part of the JDK may be a benefit, as well, but I'm not sure
how much of a consideration that is for you.
Use of package variants or facets seems like the right path to elide
64-bit for embedded systems, but Bart knows best ;)
