Here is my response:
Case A) {The others were and / or are wrong}: Would this justify
repeating their mistakes?
Case B) {The others were and / or are   right}: Why then starting from
scratch, instead of just adopting theirs?

Many of the same reason those other packaging projects were started are the reason why we too needed a better wheel :)
