If you want to more easily minimise the set of package data you have
to have, then you should download the repository ISO files provided
via My Oracle Support.

Not only will the retrieval be much faster, but you'll get just the
set of packages needed for installing S11.1. systems.

Please note there is an additional set of packages needed if you want
to have a repository that supports upgrading S11.0 systems as well.

Aha... I did notice that "extra" download there. It's a bit confusing in
that there doesnt seem to be explicit directions as to what to *do* with
that download, though?

IE: lets say you have pieced togheter sol-11_1-repo-full.iso, and
sol-11_1-upgrade-repo.iso
Now what?

There should be a README in the "extra" ISO as well as in the S11.1 documentation that covers the upgrade process. This should also be available via MOS.

Due to the change in bootloader among other things, the process is not completely straightforward.
