the case is, they're not 1 step ahead of competition because basically:
1) there is very little or no competition when it comes to desktop OSes
and 2) other operating systems (like Linux, and other *nixes) have far
better features than theirs.

if they're so smart, then why dont their OSes improve on the parts which
make it crash a lot? sure u'd say its for technical support, but then
hey, that doesnt mean they're one step ahead of the competition.

sure, linux is "competing" in the desktop realm just because there are
some people who are using it, and the growth of the number of users
using linux on their desktop is increasing (i *think*). but they (M$)
have a nameless, faceless enemy/competitor in the form of a techinically
sound and superior OS produced by brilliant minds not working for them.
but then, does this mean they're still 1 step ahead of the competition,
when the people working on linux _seem_ to be far better based on output
than their own group of developers.

well, this is IMHO. ;)
