Can you ls /run/user/1000/gvfs and see what's inside? Anything juicy?
rsteff@ENU-1:~$ ls /run/user/1000/gvfs
'sftp:host=192.168.0.134,user=rsteff'
'sftp:host=192.168.0.204,user=rsteff'
This machine, ENU-1, is 192.168.0.255.
Those are connections for file sharing that you probably have open.
Yes. Two of my other machines.
I was actually hoping to see something else. Does the obscure 4.1KB
icon refer to either of those connections?
No.
GVFS seems clean, so it's probably something else. When you right
click on the icon does it give you any specific options?
mount/unmount and eject?
Open
Mount Volume
Properties (grayed out)
Applications
Clicking on Open pops up:
Failed to mount "Volume"
The given volume was not found
Ah Ha! That makes sense. In that it doesn't make sense but it shouldn't
so the universe is functioning as intended. So my original idea was
correct, you probably plugged some sort of storage device in and later
removed it. But for whatever reason it xfce is not forgetting it. I
remember that issue from a long time ago but I thought it was fixed.
I would verify that it doesn't show up immediately after a reboot. If
everything is good after restarting, you can keep an eye on it and watch
for when it pops up again. Chances are that something was moved around
in your mountpoints and it got confused. Whatever was happening at that
time is probably key to understanding the cause.
It *could* also be a side effect of your sftp connections. Occasionally
they will need to reauthenticate and when this occurs you might have a
brief unmount->remount cycle. This would probably happen in the
background without your knowledge but could confuse xfce's volume
manager and result in unnecessary icons.
Another option is to disable the showing of volume icons in the xfce
settings. I had this issue a long time ago with USB flash drives and I
just ended up turning the icons off.
