Is there something I should be looking for on one of the logs (which one

Dick,

There are two generic logs: messages and syslog, at least on Slackware. I'd
look there, first. Depending on how log rotation is set up on your
distribution you'll probably find, e.g., messages, messages.1, messages.2, etc. Depending on the time cron/log.dail runs logrotate I'd look toward the head of messages and the tail of messages.1 and their syslog equivalents for
anything looking like ot would make a new volumn.

I do find syslog, syslog.1 syslog.2.gz ... syslog.7. gz. In syslog I find a bunch of lines talking about thumbnails:

Mar 14 22:09:08 ENU-1 dbus-daemon[1074]: [session uid=1000 pid=1074] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.thumbnails.Thumbnailer1' requested by ':1.27' (uid=1000 pid=1277 comm="Thunar --daemon " label="unconfined") Mar 14 22:09:08 ENU-1 org.freedesktop.thumbnails.Thumbnailer1[124813]: Registered thumbnailer atril-thumbnailer -s %s %u %o Mar 14 22:09:08 ENU-1 org.freedesktop.thumbnails.Thumbnailer1[124813]: Registered thumbnailer /usr/bin/gdk-pixbuf-thumbnailer -s %s %u %o Mar 14 22:09:08 ENU-1 org.freedesktop.thumbnails.Thumbnailer1[124813]: Registered thumbnailer gnome-thumbnail-font --size %s %u %o Mar 14 22:09:08 ENU-1 org.freedesktop.thumbnails.Thumbnailer1[124813]: Registered thumbnailer /usr/bin/gdk-pixbuf-thumbnailer -s %s %u %o Mar 14 22:09:08 ENU-1 dbus-daemon[1074]: [session uid=1000 pid=1074] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.thumbnails.Thumbnailer1'

I have no idea if that has anything to do with my issue, but I'm guessing thumbnails and icons are somewhat similar.

Is dmesg the same idea as messages? I don't have anything in /var/log named messages, but I do have a pile of dmesg files, dmesg, dmesg.0, dmesg.1.gz ... through .4.gz.

In reading up on how to look at dmesg I discovered dmesg --follow. I'll start that and see if anything turns up there.

Thanks for your recommendations.
