I have no idea if that has anything to do with my issue, but I'm guessing
thumbnails and icons are somewhat similar.
Dick,
That's a good guess.
When you look in /etc/passwd who's user 1000? Is that you?
Is dmesg the same idea as messages? I don't have anything in /var/log named
messages, but I do have a pile of dmesg files, dmesg, dmesg.0, dmesg.1.gz ...
through .4.gz.
dmesg is the kernel's ring buffer, /var/log/message records actions,
e.g.,plugging in an external flash drive or mounting a drive.
In reading up on how to look at dmesg I discovered dmesg --follow. I'll start
that and see if anything turns up there.
Perhaps look on http://www.freedesktop.org and see what it has to tell you
about thumbnails.
HTH,
Rich
