After some head scratching, and with help from you, I have solved the problem - Avast virus protection gets in the way of web searches. When turned off the iPlayer station access is instantaneous. I think I can leave it switched on and add exceptions to the Avast preferences. Is there a generic web address (https? http?) or addresses that I should specify? Hope this helps other suffering too.
