OK, after git clone and some hacking I now think the following:
A plugin can add "functions", such as "incrementrating", which can be mapped to buttons (any button, IR or device, I think) in the IR .map file This can then trigger actual functions (Perl), which can do whatever they want (e.g. increment the rating).
