I think this is a mixture of how I think it should (ideally) work, and
how it in actuality does work, and me misunderstanding something...
Apologies...

Let's say I navigate to browse>artist>album>to a particular track.

I then play that and want to FF thru a bit of it... I would expect to
press FF and that's it. I would _not_ expect to have been taken out of
'browse>artist>album>track'. Why should I have been?

Infact this is exactly what happens (strangely IMHO). So if I now want
to play another track off that album, rather than just pressing down or
up, I have to navigate all thru the menu from 'Now Playing' to
'browse>artist>album>track'?

See where I'm coming from...?

It never clicked before with the existing FF and REW that is throws you
into 'Now Playing' rather than where you actually were. Mainly because
it's somewhat painful to use, hence this entire thread :)

So, it seems even with the existing FF and REW, once you've done it
you're taken from where you were, to 'Now Playing'. And the best
behaviour with the scanner plugin, is basically to replicate this...
OK...

Not ideal (IMHO) but ok(ish) :)

Still think there should be FF and REW just like a CD player on the
track you are and that's it... Doesn't change where you are etc etc...
