I assumed from your first mail when you said "I am running Slimserver on my laptop and have been able to access the music at home by attaching via my home IP address xx.xx.xx.xx:9000. I can see all my music folder so I know this part is working." that this meant that you had a laptop as your server, since you don't run Slimserver on the client machine, just a browser (and Softsqueeze if you want a player).
To be clear, you need to open up ports on the home computer you are using as a server, not on the remote machine.
