Looks like you are getting there.  My own office experience was similar
-couldn't get music to actually play - until I guessed that the
proxy/firewall/whatever set-up used by the company was blocking  port
9000.  If you go into the Slimserver setup pages on your home machine
you can find somewhere (I can't look now and in any case I am on SC7
which has a quite different setup pages layout) a place to change the
port assigned for communications from 9000 to something else.  I
suggest you try this and see if changing this setting helps.  You will
of course have to change it in the browser on the remote machine and in
Slimserver to match.
