I tried placing a "shortcut" in that folder, a shortcut that points to a picture in its original location. The shortcut is just ignored. This is on a Windows system. I don't know if shortcuts are even a concept that exists in Linux or other OS's though, so maybe it isn't even reasonable to think it would work.
