The other folders were owned by "admin" and had CHMOD 0755 - I changed the permissions on the SqueezeIR folder and rebooted the Controller, and now everything is up and running again! The lesson - for other Synology users who wish to switch to the officially distributed SBS package - is either to be logged in as "admin" when you set up the folder with the XML file, or to log in as admin afterwards and change the permissions.
