I'm sorry you are disappointed, but the alternative for me would have
been to abandon my plugins completely as I couldn't justify spending so
much time on them without getting some kind of compensation. The result
would have been that more or less none of them would have worked with
7.6 and 7.7 today. The amount of donations before the commercial scheme
was nowhere near to what you seems to believe it was.

If anyone else (third party or Logitech) would like to maintain,
support and host my plugins/applets for free (or for a lower price),
this is something I would would love and even encourage, just contact
me if this is something anyone is seriously interested in doing. The
plugins are still licensed under GPL or BSD licenses, so anyone is free
to do any modifications and redistribute these without any permission
from me.

I've several times tried to get Logitech to include similar
functionality in the core product, even offered to help them doing it
for free, but there has never been any interest in this, probably
because the functionality my plugins provide isn't a focus area for
Logitech.

I think you can accomplish more or less everything related to ratings
and smart playlists through iTunes if you like this, the only
requirement is that iTunes is always running on the computer running
Squeezebox Server and that you use the iTunes integration in Squeezebox
Server during scanning.

If you want to be able to change track ratings through Squeezebox
remotes, you can use the "iTunes Update" plugin which will write
ratings to iTunes. Smart playlists is definitely supported by iTunes
and I think you will have access to them through the "Playlist" menu on
your Squeezebox.

The only part that I don't think is supported is to play a playlist bit
by bit, I think the smart iTunes playlists exposed to Squeezebox Server
Playlists menu will typically be quite large.

Another similar option is to use MusicIP integration in Squeezebox
Server, but that won't allow you to change ratings using a Squeezebox
remote control unless you have a TrackStat license that can write
ratings to MusicIP.

So would I, but I'm pretty sure Logitech would have included the
functionality in my plugins as standard functionality if it would be
the difference between success or failure of the Squeezebox products.

If you feel support for ratings and smart playlists is the key
functionality to avoid a failure, I would like you to at least put your
vote on these two enhancement requests:
