Had a play this morning.

The same result as yourself; USB stick, no problem.

Swapped it out for a Samsung M3 USB drive, direct into the pi,

> *New Volume in /media/usb0*  (Device /dev/sda1 with UUID

But no usb0 when I looked to scan.

I have tried Raspbian headless on the new pi3, but apparently there is
an issue with the pi dropping the SSH connection when only using the
wireless connection.

There are some suggestions over on the Raspberry forums, but I'm not
going to waste my time today, I'll maybe try next week sometime.
