I see no technical reason for this rigid stance.

And I see no technical reason why you couldn't improve your own solution. It's not only a question of technical feasibility. But sometimes we decide to just not to something, just because we don't want to. You don't want to apply the patch or your script after every update. Why do you expect somebody else to do the job for you?

As you seem familiar with scripting, you could easily write a simple shell script to run the update, then apply your change, couldn't you?
