In the nineteenth century there was a movement to establish a meat industry in the area around Nome Alaska. It was founded by a Russian/ Inuit woman, who brought them to Alaska, and established an incredible industry. Unfortunately after she died, the disposition of her estate could not be settled, the reindeer went wild, then died, and that was the end. Range fed reindeer, like range fed cattle carry much less fat, and in theory fewer contaminants. I say in theory, because the North is not immune to the pollutants of the south, far from it. And an environmental disaster has long lasting implications in the north, partly because of the time it takes for the reset. The caribou herd is still there as a migratory wild species. This would impose a threat on the reindeer, or vice versa, If the USDA does its job that would substantially slow the entire process. By the way Navy, moose caught in this area (SE Ontario, ) have warnings not to eat the liver, because of heavy metal contamination. That alone should give some pause, is beef liver safe? or is it at safe levels only because the steer was killed at a relatively young age. Then of course just how does that cover for the effects of genetics. A good health care system can't just skim off the cream of customers, those with chronic ailments are also in need of affordable treatment.
