I suspect Sotomayer's real problem is not the law, but her appearance; she looks like Quasimodo.
So, she equates growing up in the South Bronx as equivalent to a vicious, dog-eat-dog determent camp. Which the South Bronx was not, at least the section where she lived around Yankee Stadium. It wasn't the shortage of Latin lessons or calculus, but the shortage of dates - as in none.
