Obama asked him not to run. Paterson is very weak, although he isn't that bad as a governor. The state legislature is the problem in NY. Nonetheless, the Obamites feel that he would weaken Democrat chances of holding the Governorship of NY and that if it were to go to, say, Rudy Guiliani, it would be a launching pad for him to challenge Obama in 2012.
