Kat jumped up and ran after
her, "no but I want to get dessert. "It's a surprise," she added and raced
past Julia into the kitchen where she collected the windowless bakery
box. It wasn't easy getting it off the counter without dropping it,
but somehow she managed and started back to the living room where she put it on
the table and waited impatiently for Julia to come back.
Julia came back, handing Nick
a drink and looking curious at Kat before taking her silent instruction and
opening the box, at the same time looking at and teasing Philip that he needed
to save some for the surprise desert.
She had the lid opened and
then turned to look inside, only to give a kind of yelp laugh before opening the
box all the way and peering at the cartoon versions of the snails
and choking back laughter at the prank just pulled on her and picking one
up to show Nick and the others.
Derek had looked up sharply
at her small yelp, not really alarmed but not having been prepared for the sound
either, before lifting an curious brow. Then, seeing what it was,
started to snicker and then outright laughed at it.
He had been at the dinner
with the French cook having 'replaced' the meatballs in what they thought was a
spaghetti dinner with snails -- and the one Julia had found still
crawling. The expression on her face was priceless then and, whether it
was the medicine or just having her back now, it was the same
again.
"Who's idea was this?" Julia asked with her own grin, looking at the others
for the culprit before seeing Kat's expression and just knowing it had
been hers. She grinned then and chuckled "Good one, Kat. Definitely
a good one."
