Moncrieff's face flushed with anger, but he was able to keep controlol long
enough to avoid a temper tantrum. He obviously wouldn't get anything
incriminating from Nick. He shot him one last look before turning to Julia.
"No further questions," he said. "Your witness." Moncrieff stalked back to
his table and sat down beside his reluctant partner.
Julia stood and approached the bench, thinking for a brief moment before
starting.
"What was the last thing you remember your brother doing before the
Soulchaser sent him back to hell?"
Nick looked at his brother and then at his wife, gaze solemn as he answered
"He jumped in front of me when the Soulchaser would have tried to take my
soul and took my place."
Julia nodded thoughtfully before speaking again "I think you should also
reveal what he had done against you before he took your place."
She looked at the Furies to explain why "Because we have to point out the
bad and good and show which path he chose, even while tempted to take the
easiest and, in this case, darker path."
"Jimmy had made a deal with the Soulchaser. My soul in exchange for his.
He'd go free and I'd be sent in his place."
Julia looked at Nick, gaze gentle as she asked "And what happened, for
clarification?"
"He went instead. He jumped in and let the Soulchaser stab him and was sent
back to hell."
"Thank you. I'll wait for cross exam."
She went back to the table and sat, waiting.
