I might recommend a freeware multi-Internet-utility program called "Sam
Spade":

http://samspade.org/ssw/

Dig is just but one of the Utilities included and this program operates
on Windows 95/98/NT4/2000 . And it is freeware. :-)

On the main page, the author has some online tools you can use in lieu
of downloading the software:

http://samspade.org/

As Brian explained, dig is a DNS query program that obtains more
information from a Name Server than does the nslookup program that you
are probably more familiar. The DNS system keeps a list of all the
major Internet servers used by a provider such as their Name Servers,
their Mail Servers, Canonical names, etc. and the dig program obtains
all the information that a Name Server has about a particular host.

Besides dig, Sam Spade has the following utilities:

ping, nslookup, whois, IP block, traceroute, finger, SMTP VRFY, web
browser, keep-alive, DNS Zone transfer, SMTP relay check, USENET cancel
check, website download, website search, email header analysis, email
blacklist query, abuse address query, and Time.

It is well worth the download. However, I might point out, Sam Spade
may not be the best program for newbies. It requires at least moderate
knowledge of Internet protocols and utilities to understand and work
with the various utilities included in the program. However, the
program does come with a Help file, so you can make use of it to help
you learn how to use the features of the program.
