Mohammed,
I have and sometimes do use "Sam Spade" - a freeware by one Steve Atkins. Sam Spade
includes the DIG in addition to other network commands like "whois", "DNS look up",
"Ping", "Trace" etc. Its latest version (Beta 1.14) for Windows NT4, 2000, 95 and 98
is available for downloading at:
http://samspade.org/ssw/
(size: 1,802 kB)
DIG stands for "Domain Information Groper" - (or Grouper?) and it is a more
advanced one as it "digs" and gives more information than "nslookup" and "whois"
together. As Brian mentioned, it gives details on MX records and other related info.
(most of which I have not yet learnt to make use) which ought to be useful in
detecting e-mail server names.
While the above freeware is great for DIG command, I also did a quick search on DIG
with my WebFerret and found at least two web-based DIG service sites:
http://www.freesoft.org/CIE/Topics/35.htm
http://www.datamania.com/network/dig.html
The first of above worked OK, but the second seemed lousy - It failed to provide even
basic NSLOOKUP type info. on its own host: datamania.com (may be its own DNS lookup or
DIG server was down)
