Robert, thank you very much for your help! I am now up-to-date on Thunderbird (9), Postfix (2.8.7), and Dovecot (2.0.16) via Christian Roessners ppa.
I still have the problem with my attachments, but it narrows down to SSL, as by now, Thunderbird gives me an ssl_error_protocol_version_alert.
