No, it means just the opposite. 9.x takes up more RAM than 8.6, so
there is less available for apps., as I said. The more RAM you have,
the more 9.x will eat. I can't boot into 9 on my iBook right now to
find out how much the OS uses, but I can tell you it eats a lot more on
the iBook than my 1400 with only 64 MB, at least over 100 out of 384
MB. The mystery to me is what it does with it. It's not appreciably
faster on a 500 MHz iBook than my G3-ized 1400.

When you open and close a lot of applications, the RAM can get
fragmented, somewhat like "battery memory". It can be purged by a
restart or with a little freeware script called Mac OS Purge. If you
can't find it on versiontracker, I can mail it to you (a grand total of
8 KB!). I keep this in my Apple Menu or Control Strip and run it
periodically. It saves me a lot of aggravation. You can see how much
RAM OS Purge makes available in the "About this Mac". I also have a
little shareware prog. called Quit CMS that lives in the control strip.
I have it set to show available RAM. It's fun to see that amount shoot
up when I run OS Purge after a lot of activity.

Just because you have RAM doesn't mean that you can have a bazillion
apps open at once and expect them to behave. This is the fatal flaw in
the classical Macintosh architecture that gave extra impetus to the
development of X.
