Alan, you'll need the electronics in an Apple battery, I seriously doubt the 'Book will charge a dumb pack. However, I reckon the 'Book might run on a pack if you can use some sort of external charger. That doesn't seem worth the trouble. However, the _8_ cells you need to rebuild an Apple battery can be purchased as a 9.6v NiMH pack sold for RC hobbiests. I bought a 2100mah set at the Rat Shack for ~$25, works fine and is actually a little lighter than the original.
