I am responding to this e-mail late, but I do not think this problem has 
anything to do with backlighting...

IIRC, b/w (+greyscale?) active-matrix LCD screens ALL have the unfortunate 
side-effect of developping the "dark-cornering" effect. I noticed the same 
problem on a 170 I had awhile ago, and I remember reading about the problem 
being the active matrix screen...
