Hi, 
When installing 8.5, virtual memory is automatically
configured (just like 9.x). If you need 8.6, then
maybe attempt a partition. If not, 8.1 is best.
Leave OS9 for the G3 series, and X for the G4.
I did a Teoma search for "partition powerbook driver".
You'll see what I mean, or not.
